Montenegro, the Balkans' best-kept secret (but not for long…)

For years, Montenegro quietly shimmered under the radar, known only to the most curious of travellers. But the secret’s out – and this tiny Balkan gem is finally getting the attention it deserves.

With its glittering Adriatic coastline, dramatic mountains, glassy lakes and peaceful forest trails, Montenegro offers the kind of wild beauty that feels untouched – but that’s changing fast. As more people discover it, the challenge is now how to explore responsibly, keeping its natural magic intact for future travellers.

Whether you're dreaming of slow sailing days, hiking high into national parks or simply wandering cobbled towns by the sea, Montenegro’s charm is undeniable. Here’s what to know – and how to enjoy it sustainably.

A new way to see the Adriatic Coast

One of the most memorable ways to explore Montenegro’s coastline is by boat – and not just any boat, but a traditional Turkish gulet. These handcrafted wooden sailing boats are ideal for slow travel, hopping between quiet coves, island beaches, and charming harbour towns.

Among the highlights along the route is Perast, a picture-perfect village that somehow fits 16 churches and 17 Venetian palaces onto one small waterfront street. There’s also Herceg Novi, with its Ottoman-era fortresses and open-air theatre overlooking the bay – perfect for golden-hour views.

No trip to this part of the country is complete without a stop in Kotor. The old town, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a maze of medieval alleyways, stone churches, and atmospheric squares. It’s popular – sometimes very popular – but there are ways to skip the crowds. One of them is the new cable car, which whisks visitors from Kotor up to Lovćen National Park in just ten minutes. From there, you can hike, bike, zipline, or even hop on the thrilling Alpine Coaster for a high-speed ride down the mountain with sweeping views across the bay.

Gulet cruises also allow plenty of time to swim, snorkel, paddleboard or kayak straight from the boat. And when you dock for the night? Settle into a waterfront taverna for a seafood feast, or join your captain in catching fresh fish for dinner back on board.

Responsible travel and sustainable resorts

Montenegro’s coastline is changing fast, with big investments being made in new resorts, hotels, and infrastructure. It’s a sign of the country’s growing popularity – but also a moment to pause and think about how tourism can evolve in the right way.

Luštica Bay is a great example of what sustainable development can look like. Built with careful environmental planning, this new resort village is designed to become one of Europe’s first zero-waste destinations. It’s already home to The Chedi Luštica Bay, a stylish hotel with sea-view yoga classes, spa treatments and activities like sailing, diving and biking – all rooted in a respect for the natural world.

There’s plenty more on the horizon here too: six more hotels are in the works, alongside Montenegro’s first golf course, set to open its first nine holes in 2026.

Porto Montenegro in Tivat

Across the bay in Tivat, the luxury marina of Porto Montenegro has also grown into a destination in its own right, with smart shops, cocktail bars, and some very glamorous yachts. But there’s substance behind the style too. You’ll find a fascinating Maritime Heritage Museum, telling the story of the country’s complex past, from Ottoman rule to Yugoslavia and beyond.

And if you're looking for something new, Boka Place – a wellness-focused neighbourhood opening soon – will offer restaurants, events, and spa hotels including the new Siro Boka Place Tivat, perfect for a relaxed reset after a road trip through the mountains.

Montenegro for adventure lovers

It might be famous for its coast, but Montenegro’s wild heart lies inland – in its towering peaks, deep canyons and serene lakes. It’s a dream for anyone who loves the outdoors.

One unmissable spot is Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans and a haven for wildlife. Look out for Dalmatian pelicans, rare herons, and even the occasional otter. You can explore by kayak, boat or on foot, stopping at remote island monasteries or local wineries along the way.

Further north lies Biogradska Gora National Park, one of Europe’s last primeval forests. Ancient trees tower above a tranquil lake here, with trails that are gentle enough for a slow wander, or challenging enough for a full-day hike.

National park Biogradska Gora

In winter, the action moves to the slopes. The ski resort town of Kolašin is transforming fast, with new hotels and ski-in-ski-out lodges popping up across the Kolašin Valleys. It’s a fantastic base for skiing, snowboarding or simply soaking up the mountain air, with resorts like Swissôtel Kolašin and Pullman Breza Kolašin offering a luxury alpine stay without the Alps’ price tag.

And if you’re after a true natural wonder, don’t miss the Tara River Gorge in Durmitor National Park. It’s one of the deepest canyons in the world, and a top spot for white-water rafting, hiking and ziplining. Plus, Durmitor is a Unesco World Heritage Site, meaning protections are in place to keep it just as jaw-dropping for years to come.

Why now is the time to visit Montenegro

Montenegro might be small – about half the size of Wales – but it’s thinking big. With fast development and growing global interest, it won’t stay a secret for much longer.

But there’s still time to experience its quiet charm, unspoiled trails and warm, authentic hospitality before it becomes the next Croatia. Travel slowly, stay consciously, and support the local businesses and communities that make this place so special.

At Journeys Made, we’re all about celebrating meaningful moments in every corner of the world – and Montenegro is packed with them. Whether you’ve walked the walls of Kotor or kayaked through Skadar, it’s the kind of destination you’ll want to remember. And that’s exactly what our personalised travel keyrings are for.
