How To Mark International Women’s Day 2023

Celebrate the amazing women in your life this International Women’s Day on March 8th.

Happy International Women’s Day!

International Women's Day 8th March 2023

Women should be celebrated and recognised for their achievements every day, but we know that’s not the case. International Women’s Day is the time to raise awareness about women’s issues, campaign for equality and change and make women’s voices heard. Many people mark this day by recognising the amazing women they have in their lives. This could be a mother, friend, colleague, or sister – any woman who has inspired, supported, or guided you or made a difference in your life.

“Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.”

- G D Anderson

The History Of International Women’s Day

International Women's Day is a United Nation sanctioned global holiday that aims to celebrate women's contributions to society. In the early 1900s, unrest began to circulate amongst women, triggered by social constructs and inequality. The day has grown year after year to become a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It’s also a day to raise awareness of equality and bring attention to women’s issues all over the world. The theme for 2023 is #EmbraceEquity and focuses on how gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA.

How To Celebrate International Women’s Day

The 8th of March is a day of celebration and advocacy for women’s rights and equality around the world. Everyone celebrates in their own way but if you’re stuck for ideas, here are a few ways you can mark this special day:

Share Good News About Women

It’s not often we hear much good news these days, so choose International Women’s Day to share some good news about Women. You can be inspired and learn something new as you research good news to share. We love this story about women rangers in Zimbabwe!

Buy Gifts For The Women In Your Life

Gifts are a great way to mark a special occasion and the possibilities are endless. Generally, you can’t go wrong with flowers. For International Women’s Day, you can make your bouquet extra special by choosing flowers that symbolise what the day is all about. The Mimosa is a brightly colour branch flower that has unofficially been adopted as the symbol for International Women’s Day. For a more traditional bouquet, choose pink roses that are a symbol of gratitude and admiration, making them the perfect choice for International Women’s Day.

Our Keychains also make a thoughtful gift, if you have travelled somewhere special with a friend, mother, sister or any amazing women in your life, our travel tokens are a great gift to remember the time you spent together.

Show Support On Social Media

This is something that everyone can do, and it’s so easy! Show your solidarity with women all over the world by sharing information or raising awareness on your social channels. Just make sure it’s from verified sources. You could simply share a picture of a special woman in your life and don’t forget to include the official hashtag #EmbraceEquity. You may think there isn’t much power in sharing a post, but it’s so much more than that. It builds awareness and creates traction that can lead to bigger and better things.

Donate To A Charity That Supports Women

Donating to charities that support women is a great way to show your support this International Women’s Day. Charities are doing great work all over the world and they need donations to keep doing what they’re doing. If money is tight right now, see if you can volunteer your time to help at a charity event, with admin, or by raising awareness of their cause.

Here are even more ways you can get involved:

  • Shop at or use services from women-owned businesses
  • Educated yourself by reading books about women’s issues or listening to podcasts
  • Advocate for equality in your workplace
  • Watch films, tv programmes and documentaries that are created by women
  • Report cyber-misogyny or cyber-sexism when you see it online (or any type of online abuse)
  • Wear purple – the official colour of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is about highlighting the great things women are doing and raising awareness of the work we still need to do. Every woman and girl should have equal rights, opportunities, and freedom to shine, no matter their background or where they live. This day is an occasion to show we won’t stop until that happens.
