Discover the wonders of Sri Lanka

What’s the best way to describe Sri Lanka? The clue is in the title, it's wonderful. The whole island is a colourful palette of magnificent scenery, amazing wildlife and a rich cultural history. The coast is lined with palm trees and beautiful beaches. While inland you’ll find quaint villages, sacred temples and over 20 national parks. It’s a tear-shaped gem in the Indian Ocean and is the perfect destination for those looking to holiday with a cultural difference. It’s a truly spiritual island with an energy that will stay with you long after you leave.

When’s the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

The best time to visit will depend on which side of the island you decide to explore. Although it’s a fairly small island (about 4 times smaller than the UK), it’s certainly diverse – and the weather is no different.

Sri Lanka experiences two monsoon seasons on either side of the island. So to avoid this, the West and South coast has the best weather between December and March. While the best weather on the East coast is from May to September. If you’re heading for the Central Hills, January to March are the months that see the most sunshine. Thanks to its close proximity to the equator, temperatures rarely dip below the 28°C mark, so while you can certainly leave the scarf and gloves at home, you may want to pack an umbrella. Whilst no one wants rain on holiday, we have the wetter months to thank for creating a stunning landscape of greenery that has to be seen to be believed.

How to make the most of your time

Whether you’re a sun worshipper or adventure seeker, Sri Lanka offers something for everyone to enjoy. The diversity of the island is what makes it such a popular choice for seasoned travellers, and you’ll want to make the most of every second.

You can enjoy your morning cuppa at a tea plantation. Visit one of the amazing temples in the afternoon, then take an evening hike to a stunning waterfall – it’s the perfect Sri Lankan day!

Animal lovers can take a safari at Yala National Park in the hopes of spotting a leopard, or take a whale watching boat tour at Dondra Head. The more adventurous can learn to surf, zip-wire through the forest or kayak through the tranquil waters of Samanalawewa reservoir. And we have to mention the food! Be sure to sample as much of the local cuisine as you can, and tantalise your taste buds with the fresh local produce and out of this world curries.

Where to go?

This beautiful island has many regions that are perfect for exploring, however, some of our favourites are:

Kandy

Kandy is a large city and the home to most of the tea plantations on the island. You’ll also find the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic here, which is a UNESCO world heritage site and is one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world.

Ella

With some of the most stunning waterfalls in the world as a backdrop, Ella is a beautiful part of the island that’s not to be missed. A trip here wouldn’t be complete without experiencing in the famous train journey and seeing the island from a while new point of view.

Colombo

Colombo is more than just the gateway to the island; the capital city is on the West side of the island and showcases Sri Lankas’ cosmopolitan side. Take a tuk-tuk rude through the city, enjoy the delicious street food, or explore the Talangama Wetlands.

Galle

You’ll find Galle in the South of the island and is a great place for beach lovers. If local history is more your thing visit Galle Fort, built by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Galle is also where you can see the traditional stilt fisherman at work.

Beruwala

Beruwala offers a laid back vibe that’s perfect for people looking to get away from it all. The beaches are outstanding, and the friendly locals will welcome you with open arms. You can also enjoy the water sports, visit the bustling port or take a trip to the colonial lighthouse for a great photo opportunity.
